When I was reading our course materials, I noticed that all the librarians were referred to as “he” or it was implied that a librarian was a male. This is far different from the world I know today. My library has 13 employees, and two are male. There are only a handful of males who are in higher positions within my specific library system, so I was curious, when did this shift happen? Why is it that men dominated the library field for so long, but now, they are almost an oddity? Why are women now seen as librarians, but they are strict and frigid, yet happier in their position than their male counterparts? For this assignment I will explore the history of females as librarians, how they came to dominate the field, and how there are still imbalances.
